The idea that ‘individual responsibility’ means “every man for himself,” is a limited interpretation of the concept. On the deepest level we’re all connected. The notion of mutual responsibility is actually more aligned with self-reliance. The true definition of taking personal responsibility is having concern for the welfare of those around us. A house with many rooms is still one house. Taking care of just one corner isn’t a wise strategy. The dysfunction of the neglected part will over time spread to the rest of the house.
