Most of what we now call Christmas actually predated Christianity by more than 2,000 years. Midwinter celebrations honoring the sun and other gods around the time of the winter solstice were enjoyed by diverse ancient peoples. Many of the popular Christmas customs like Santa Claus, decorated trees, mistletoe, gift giving and gathering for feasts, originate from pre-Christian traditions.
