Most children are taught by their (well-meaning) parents to ignore their feelings. Phrases like “you’re okay, don’t cry, there’s nothing to be afraid of and act like a big boy or girl” are designed to help us (and them) avoid discomfort. What they actually do is teach us to avoid feeling our feelings. This leaves many of us facing the effects of repressed emotions later in life. Unfelt feelings surface as physical or emotional issues that can be healed by being felt. We heal by slowing down, paying attention to the associated sensations in our bodies and just…
Feeling them.
