Saying you know ‘the truth’ because you heard or read it somewhere can make you sound less intelligent than you are. Many of the so-called facts you know are approximations, best guesses or even false. Information about what’s good and bad for health changes regularly. Stories about famous people are often sensationally woven fabrications. Science constantly improves upon itself. When you see ‘facts’ and opinions simply as indicators offering general direction, you’re open minded and more likely to discover the actual truth. That’s the difference between a head full of facts…
And wisdom.

For many years I have made a semi-private joke about what I knew. I have said that I had a great number of items on inventory, and that I had discovered that a great number of them were false. The trouble lay in my not having much indication of which were which, so anything you heard from me was by its nature unreliable. I am sure I have enjoyed the joke far more than anyone else.
