If we’re already feeling down, a small misstep by somebody else can loom so large in our minds that we find ourselves activating an avalanche of mental condemnation of them, piling on real or imagined past transgressions and solidifying a negative mental image of them. This doesn’t help our connection with them. Depending on how conscious we are, we can stop, remind ourselves that we’re not feeling well and abandon the impulse to continue spinning a case against them.
