Many of the customs that accompany what we now call Christmas predate Christianity by more than 2,000 years. Midwinter celebrations honoring the sun and other gods around the winter solstice were enjoyed by diverse ancient peoples. Popular Christmas rituals and practices like Santa Claus, decorated trees, mistletoe, gift giving and gathering for feasts, originate from pre-Christian traditions.
