When we repeat stories to ourselves about painful events in the past, it ensures that our pain continues into the future, long after the event is over. Dragging the past into the present prevents us from enjoying the freshness of new moments. Emotional pain needs to be felt rather than repititiously thought or talked about. Emotions create physical sensations in our bodies.
