When we meet others we don’t like or understand, it’s tempting to be dismissive or spin a story about their weirdness or inferiority. This kind of characterization permits us to exclude them from consideration and kindness. But if instead we consciously observe the situation and use every difficult or unpleasant interaction as an opportunity to develop our own capacity for understanding and tolerance, we’ll soon discover that those people are much more like us than they are different. The more we try to understand them, the more understanding, tolerant and kinder we become…

To ourselves.
