Physicists say we exist in an unlimited quantum field of energy; a sea of infinite possibilities just waiting to happen. As conscious beings we experience energy as matter. Quantum mechanics postulates that energy only appears as matter when it is observed. In other words, you play an important part in creating the reality you see and experience. Since the observer creates reality through the act of observing it, reality truly is in the eye of the beholder. When you don’t like what you see, rather than complain about it or find someone to blame…

There is no question that we play an important part in the reality we see and experience. But I suspect it’s a mistake to try to make a parallel to a photon behaving like a particle when it’s observed, because that only can be seen at the level of individual photons and electrons. Matter and energy in the large aggregates we can notice behave as statistical averages of lots of individual behaviors.
It may not matter, but I am shy about popularized applications of quantum mechanics. Quantum mechanics on a macroscopic scale (our size) gets very fuzzy. Also, since people still can’t reconcile General Relativity with Quantum Mechanics, something must be wrong with the whole picture. Physics is right now in a big hole, and digging hard.
